Wine Wandering

The Hermanus Wine Wander starts at the Hemel en Aarde Craft Village where the Wine Village boasts the largest and finest selections of South African wines. Also in the Hemel en Aarde Village are Whalehaven Winery, where you can sample wines with a view of the mountains and the ocean, and Hermanus Pietersfontein, where the Saturday Market and their wine tasting is a pleasurable experience for the taste buds. Following the R320 road to Caledon, through the Hemel en AardeValley formed by the slopes of the Glen Vauloch Mountains, next is the Southern Right wine cellar, together with a quaint farm stall. Further along on the right is the resplendent Hamilton Russell estate where you realise why this valley is called “Heaven and Earth”.

The wine route then leads you to Bouchard Finlayson where celebrated winemaker Peter Finlayson creates wines that are rated as the best of their kind in the world. La Vierge is high up on the slopes of the hill to the left, after you have rounded a sharp hairpin bend in the road. Sumaridge wines are further along the road to the left overlooking a dam and farmlands. You will recognize it by its attractive stone building. After passing Sumaridge, be on the look out for the sign to the right which leads you to the Newton Johnson cellar higher up in the fynbos covered western slope of the Raed-na-Gael Mountain. From Newton Johnson there are breathtaking views over the De Bos Dam and along Karwyderskraal to Fisherhaven, Sandown Bay and the Hangklip Mountains of the Betty’s Bay area. Beautiful sunsets are a sight to behold. Seven kilometers further up the Hemel-en-Aarde road on the left at the foot of the Babylon Toren Mountain, you will find Creation, a magic destination, savour glorious wines, innovatively paired with delectable platters. Many of these estates are suitable venues for weddings and celebrations.

A trip through the Hemel-en-Aarde valley is a must - not just for wine lovers. Visiting the valley to enjoy the stunning vistas of rolling vineyards, breathe the fresh mountain air or indulge in the excellent cuisine presented by many restaurants on the wine farms is certainly well worth the experience. All cellars are open daily for tasting.
